Google Introduces Pop-Up Video Info That No One Will Use

Google indirect requests to remind you that the Google Play store has more than just android apps — bid, say, movies you can download, with embedded pop-up discipline about role players.

The Google Play Movies & angstrom unit; TV app (yes, that’s actually what it’s called) received an modify Wednesday that displays pop up cards with information about the thespian on screen, the movie you’re watching, and the music playing in the background. It’s like having a film student sit down on the couch with you notwithstanding without tedious conversations about stultify student debt.

The news came on the heels of Amazon’s announcement that its X-Ray feature was being ported to TV shows. Unlike X-Ray, which displays information from IMDB, Google uses its Knowledge Graph to power its database of movie knowledge.

While watching angiotensin-converting enzyme of the hundreds of movies in the Google Play Movies & TV app that supports the new feature, stub out pause on your tablet (Android 4.0 or higher tablet) and a circle appears around the actors recognized by the app. Tap the actor’s face and an info card detailing their bio and upstart work pops up. The UI is much slicker than X-Ray’s, but if you want anything more than the actor’s age, character name and birthplace, the app kicks you to a browser.

There’s an even bigger problem, at least for Google: When was the farthest time you rented or purchased a movie from Google Play? No matter how awesome they might be, advanced features are like trees falling in the woods if no one sees them. If Google wants to compete with Amazon, Netflix and Apple, it must Android owners to actually do something with Google Play beyond downloading apps.

Currently the feature is only available in the United States, but Google hopes to push the service to other countries and Android devices soon.
