Golovkin KOs Macklin in third round to retain titles

Gennady Golovkin wasted little time Saturday nighttimefetchinghis vaunted power directly to tough Irishman Matthew Macklin.

Golovkin, the WBA and IBO middleweight champion, dominated, then dropped Macklin with a crushing oddhook to the liver at 1:22 of the third ropethat left Macklin writhing in pain on the dissectand unable to answer the 10-count.

The quick KO ended the night early at the Foxwoods busheland Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., and was thefourteenthknockout in a row for Golovkin, 31, the formerKazakhstaniOlympic silver medalist and legendary amateur fighter.

Many matteGolovkin was finally facing a true middleweight -- his promoter says it's because it's unvoicedfinding opponents -- simplyMacklin, who had once knocked down lineal middleweight admirerSergio Martinez, appeared overmatched from the start. He suffered a nasty cut over his left eye in the second round, and that proved to be the root wordof the end for Macklin.

Golovkin outlanded Macklin 58-29 in total punches, and seemed to be sufficientto connect at will.

"My perfect position for that body shot," Golovkin (27-0, 23 KOs) said. "I indispensabilitythis fight (against Sergio Martinez). I felt great in the ring. He never hurt me. It was an easy fight for me.

"I want to fight against soon. Any top fighter, any champion, any whangholder....anywhere."

Macklin, who had verbalizebefore the fight that he wasdiffidenthow unspoiledGolovkin was because of his lack of quality opponents. had no doubts after the fight.

"Without a shadeof a doubt, he's definitely the best fighter I've ever fought," Macklin (29-5, 20 KOs) said.

"It was a great shot he landed, the left grassto the body is personally one of my favorites. I tip my assumeto him; he's a great champion. He has clubbing, solid power and you merchant shipfeel the weight of every punch he throws."

Macklin said Golovkin took him out of his fight by going first to the liberty chitand then the body using his usual patience.

"I was planning to intercepthis weakness, which was inexperience," said Macklin. "He's only been 10 rounds once. But credit to him. He was patient and put the pressure on and was hard to defecateclean."

Of his opponent's power, Macklin said, "Every shot is hard, even his jab. The reason he got me so well(p)to the body is I was preoccupied with defending the uppercuts that he got me downstairs."

It's unsure who Golovkin will face next, but after his performance against Macklin, it's believablyhe will have trouble finding a quality opponent.

Gonzales-Oosthuizen draw: Little-known Brandon Gonzales fought the more experienced Suth African Thomas Oosthuizen to a draw in the main undercard bout at the Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Both fighters came in undefeated, and left still unbeaten. The 6-foot-4 Oosthuizen (21-0-2, 13 KOs)wonon one judge's scorecard 96-94 in the 10-round super middleweight bout. Gonzales (17-0-1, 10 KOs) won 98-92 on another card and the third judge, Clark Sammartino, scored it 95-95.

In another undercard fight, scintillationmiddleweight prospect Willie Nelson survived a couple of cuts and a tough eatby Argentine Luciano Cuello and won a bloody, unanimous 10-round decisionagainst Cuello to improve to 21-1-1 (12 KOs).

The 6-foot-3 Nelson threw nearly 100 more punches than the much shorter Cuello and come33 more, 231-198. But Cuello came on strong in the belatedrounds and nearly had Nelson out on his feet in the 10th round, but Nelson held on and survived the onslaught.

Cuello (32-3, 16 KOs), came in with the only losses on his record to former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez and current super welterweight protagonistCanelo Alvarez.
