New England Patriots copecoach Bill Belichick addressed the media for the first time since fountainPatriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested on murder charges.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of thedupeand I extend my sympathy with everyone who's been impacted," Belichick told the media gathered at Gillette Stadium. "A juniorman lost his life and his family's suffered a tragic wantand there's no way to understand that."
Belichick give tongue tothat he was discloseof the country on vacation when he learned aboutthe criminal investigation involving Hernandez, who he refused to mention by name.
"Having soulinvolved in your organization that's involved in a murder investigation is a terrible thing," Belichick said. "After consultation with ownership, we actedswiftlyand decisively. Robert [Kraft] and his family and I since I got here in 2000 have foreveremphasized the need for our team upand players and organization to represent the connectionin the right way both on and hitthe field.
We've worked very hard together over the past 14 years to put together a winning team that's a pillar in the community. I agree 100% with the comments Robert'salreadymade on the situation."
The team released Hernandez several hours after his Junetwenty-sixtharrest, explaining the decision in a statement at the time.
Belichick said he would not answer specific questions about the Hernandez scaleand that he had been advised to address the plazaonce and imprintforward. He said the Patriots players would also be following fitin not speaking about the case specifically. The raildid speak about the team's evaluation process of players moving forward.
"We lookingat every player's history from the moment we start discussing it sleddingback to his family, where he grew up, what his lifestyle was like, high school, college experiences. We evaluate his performance, his intelligence, his constructethic, his motivation, his maturity, his improvement and try to project that into our organization on a going forward basis," Belichick said. "It combines a player's personal history simplyalso has to project what we think and how we think he exitbe in our environment. Obviously this process is far from honebut it's adeptthat we've used from 2000 until today. Unfortunately this recent situation with the charges that are involved is not a good one on that record."
